Overview

The NIAID Physician-Scientist Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) is a grant program aimed at bolstering the number of highly skilled independent physician-scientists. It primarily targets exceptional postdoctoral researchers with clinical doctorate degrees, assisting them in smoothly transitioning from mentored research roles into independent faculty positions that possess tenure track or equivalent status. This transition is facilitated by providing the awardees with independent NIAID research support to begin competitive research careers in biomedical fields and mitigate the national shortage of physician-scientists.

Please note, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is tailored for candidates who plan to conduct research that does not include leading an independent clinical trial, conducting a feasibility study for a clinical trial, or taking part in an ancillary clinical trial. However, the FOA allows candidates to be involved in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. If a candidate wishes to propose and lead a clinical trial or an ancillary clinical trial, they will need to apply through a different FOA (FOA #).
