Overview

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a research education program called Team-Based Design in Biomedical Engineering Education. This program, which doesn't include a clinical trial, aims to support educational activities that can improve the training of the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research workforce.

Under this program, the NIH will provide funding for innovative educational activities, primarily focusing on the development of skills through structured courses. The program encourages innovative approaches to enhance biomedical engineering design education to prepare future specialists for the evolving needs of biomedical research and healthcare technology sectors.

Institutions are welcome to apply if they promote setting up new team-based design courses or aim to improve existing ones in undergraduate biomedical engineering departments or other programs that offer biomedical engineering tracks or minors. The primary target audience for this program is undergraduate biomedical engineering students, and the training is designed to happen in a teamwork-focused environment.

Not only does this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourage current best practices, including multidisciplinary education, introducing the regulatory pathway related to medical device marketing, and immersion in clinical scenarios, it further challenges institutions to come up with innovative activities that could potentially revolutionize biomedical engineering design education. This could be the next step in forming the future generation of biomedical engineering experts.
