Overview

This information pertains to a grant scheme titled 'Focused Technology Research and Development (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)'. The purpose of this grant is to fund projects centered primarily on developing innovative technologies, with the capabilities to contribute to the acquisition of fundamental biomedical knowledge.

Applications for this grant should highlight the project's technical novelty and potential future impact on the biomedical sector. The end results of the funded research are expected to be fully functional prototypes. These could include new instruments, methodologies, synthetic processes, or biological products, which should be sufficiently described and ready for their initial application in biomedical research.

However, using the technology to answer specific biomedical questions falls outside the scope of this program and should not be included in the proposal, as these aspects will not receive funding. It's essential that the technology's principle is already proven, even though there could still be significant technical obstacles.

Applicants are asked to provide preliminary data with their submissions. Projects that still carry considerable risks but are propelled by initial feasibility studies may be suitable for a reduced-budget, three-year R01 proposal, as this structure is designed to better manage risk and monetary investment.

On the other hand, projects that have been strongly substantiated by feasibility studies and aim to create fully functional prototypes could necessitate larger budgets and a projected duration of four years. For early-stage investigators, a five-year project duration may be required.

The evaluators may deem projects that mainly concentrate on improvement, consolidation, or obvious extensions of established technologies as less competitive.
