Overview

This is a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for the initiative, Technology Development Research for Establishing Feasibility and Proof of Concept (R21 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed). The initiative is aimed to support exploratory research which will lead to the development of innovative technologies for biomedical research. High-risk approaches with potential for significant impact will be preferred and rewarded. While the projects are expected to be risky or novel, they should show a high potential of making an impact.

It is important to note that while the impact of these technologies may be important, it's likely to be far off in the future. Applicants should focus on the development of new technology without a specific biomedical application in mind as it falls outside the purview of the program, and won't be funded. The primary goal is to support proof of concept studies for feasibility and exploratory technology development.

Feasibility should not have already been established in the literature or with preliminary data. Applicants may refer to published data to point out the current state of the art, but these data should not be used to forecast or predict project outcomes. Unpublished data which may seem to forecast the success of the projects are not allowed. However, it's acceptable to refer to and use data from widely available preprints that have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
