Overview

The NIDCR Dual Degree Dentist Scientist Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) targets remarkable dual degree dentist scientists in the industry. The objective of this initiative is to promote the progression and continuous development of capable and autonomous dentist scientists. The award provides support in two distinct phases, helping such individuals smoothly transition from mentored research roles to independent tenure-track positions or equivalent.

The first phase consists of two years of guided training and the second phase ranges from three to five years of independent research. There's an additional benefit of a five-year period for independent support (R00) specifically designed to cater to the clinical training needs of a dental specialty program. This option comes with a stipulation of a maximum effort of 25% (equivalent to 3 person-months) in any given year during the R00 phase.
