Overview

The Career Transition Award, or K22, is a grant offered by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It's specifically designed for NINDS clinicians who are neurologists or neurosurgeons with a strong background in science. The award aims to help these clinician-scientists transition from the NIH's internal research program, or intramural appointment, to external faculty roles at academic institutions.

This two-phase program provides support for these scientists to develop and refine their independent research skills. Phase one is spent in the NIH’s intramural setting, where recipients work closely with established teams before entering the final phase where they transition to an external institution. Here, the scientists will assume their new roles as faculty members with independent research funding.

The program's ultimate goal is to aid the career transitions of these clinician-scientists, encouraging them to not only continue their scientific research but also stay involved in clinical activities. Completion of a clinical trial is a requirement of the K22 program.
