Overview

The Pancreatic Cancer Detection Consortium (PCDC) has announced a funding opportunity for Research Units (RUs) to conduct research on early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and characterization of its precursor lesions. The goal is to identify patients who are at high risk of progressing to cancer.

As part of the National Cancer Institute's 2014 Scientific Framework, PCDC aims to develop and test new molecular and imaging biomarkers for early detection of PDAC. The focus is also on identifying patients at high risk because of genetic factors or the presence of precursor lesions who might benefit from early intervention.

Each RU will comprise a multi-disciplinary team tasked with various studies. This includes identifying and testing biomarkers measurable in bodily fluids for early detection of PDAC, determining the likelihood of pancreatic cysts developing into cancer, using machine learning for biomarker discovery or validation, conducting biomarker validation studies, and developing molecular or imaging-based screening methods for high-risk populations. Notably, the RUs will be responsible for creating a biorepository by collecting longitudinal biospecimens.

Collaboration is an important aspect of the initiative, with each RU expected to engage in joint activities with other RUs. This includes sharing ideas, biospecimens, and data within the Consortium.

Support for the RUs will be provided by the Management and Data Coordination Unit (MDCU), the other scientific component of the PCDC. The MDCU will assist with study design, protocol development, statistical analysis, coordination, data management, and stewardship for the consortium-wide projects, including the biorepository-building effort.
