Overview

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is inviting applications for a new grant funding opportunity. The focus of this grant is to support and encourage research studies on the mechanisms by which bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) can influence cancer risk, encouraging scientists who specialize in bariatric surgery to extend their research beyond short-term topics like weight loss and diabetes, towards the impact of this surgery on cancer.

The main objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to help facilitate proof of concept studies that aim at discovering preliminary evidence for feasibility and initial development of ideas. The investigators need to ensure their feasibility proofs are newly developed and original, as pre-existing proofs developed in literature or from preliminary data will not be accepted. On the other hand, investigators are allowed to use references and data from widely available preprints as long as they have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

If an investigator already holds unpublished preliminary data, they should consider applying for the companion R01 research project instead of this grant. Please note that this grant is titled "Mechanisms that Impact Cancer Risk after Bariatric Surgery (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)", meaning no clinical trials will be funded under this grant opportunity.
