Overview

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) National and Regional Resources is offering a funding opportunity (known as R24) for established resources that have significant user bases across multiple states (considered regional) or nationwide. The opportunity does not allow for clinical trials.

The NIGMS aims to enhance research across the country by assisting national or regional resources that offer key facilities, equipment, technologies, research tools, software, and services to a broad base of users. Eligible resources may be new establishments consolidated from local or regional facilities, as long as they offer substantial economies of scale. These resources should ideally increase the accessibility of supported technologies or services to researchers across the region or country.

However, this funding opportunity does not include major new research and development projects. A resource, in this context, is a service that provides research capabilities and expertise to a large number of investigators. The intention is to provide access to researchers, regardless of their biomedical research focus, without duplicating or replacing resources funded by other National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes and Centers (ICs) or host institutions. Only those resources whose technical abilities fall under the areas supported by NIGMS will be considered.

Further, these resources are required to stay updated with current best practices and make their capabilities and availability widely known through active outreach. They should also provide user training and support. However, resources such as stand-alone data resources and databases are not eligible for this funding opportunity.

Finally, this funding opportunity is only open to resources that have previously received NIGMS funding.
