Overview

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is issuing a funding opportunity announcement for the Mentored Career Development Award aimed at promoting faculty diversity in biomedical research. This grant program strives to boost the number of highly-trained investigators from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research.

Under the guidance of an experienced mentor in biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences, the grant program aims to support the research independence of recipients. It is particularly targeted towards individuals whose interests in basic, clinical and translational research are rooted in the use of advanced methods and experimental approaches. These should be targeted at solving problems associated with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic diseases, and sleep disorders found in general and health disparity populations.

The funding opportunity announcement is also extended to institutions with eligible faculty members who can engage in supervised research and special study under the guidance of a mentor. The said mentor must be an accomplished investigator in the proposed research area and have a track record of fostering the development of independent investigators.

Designed specifically for promising individuals proposing to lead an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or ancillary clinical trial, the program offers an exceptional opportunity to accelerate research and career development. However, those not planning an independent clinical trial, or seeking to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, must apply to the companion funding opportunity announcement RFA-HL-22-011.
