Overview

The Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research (K24) is a grant offered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This award is specifically designed to support health-professional doctorates who are at the midpoint of their career. The goal of this grant is to allocate them protected time, meaning time that is specifically set aside for them to focus on their work. The work in question is patient-oriented research or POR.

In addition to conducting their own research, the grant also has a mentorship component. Those who receive the K24 Award are expected to act as mentors. The mentees they will be guiding are primarily clinical residents, clinical fellows, and junior clinical faculty members. This award also requires the grant recipient to carry out an independent clinical trial in order to broaden their research scope and skills.
