Overview

The NIH Pathway to Independence Award (commonly known as the Parent K99/R00 program) is designed with the goal of fostering a strong community of new and skillful independent researchers, backed by the NIH. This program is specifically targeted towards highly talented postdoctoral researchers who are either involved in research or have a clinical doctorate degree.

The main focus of the program is to ensure a seamless and timely shift from guided postdoctoral research roles to independent, faculty positions which could include a tenure-track role or an equivalent. In order to help recipients initiate their independent research careers competitively, the NIH provides separate research support during this changeover stage.
