Overview

The Independent Scientist Award (Parent K02 - Independent Clinical Trial Required) is an incentive by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) aimed at cultivating exceptional scientists. It achieves this goal by providing financial support for their salaries over a period of three to five years.

This award chiefly offers "protected time" to emerging independent scientists, allowing them to concentrate on vital research activities. Through this intensive research, the scientists can significantly advance their careers. The individual needs of the candidate guide the design of each independent scientist career award program, allowing for a personalized approach.

The award is specifically geared towards scientists who aim to lead an independent clinical trial, a preliminary study for a clinical trial, or a distinct ancillary clinical trial related to their research and career growth. However, applicants who don't plan on conducting an independent clinical trial, or those who wish to gain experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, would need to apply to companion Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).
