Overview

The Independent Scientist Award (Parent K02 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed) is a significant initiative by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Its primary goal is to nurture the growth of exceptional scientists by offering them the opportunity to contribute to their research field significantly. The K02 award supports the scientists by providing them with salary support and "protected time" for a period of three to five years. This assistance is especially significant for newly independent scientists who require an intensive period of research focus to boost their research careers.

Every independent scientist career award program is customized to suit each candidate's distinctive needs. It is important to note that this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is developed specifically for applicants who are not proposing to lead an independent clinical trial, a feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial.

However, applicants proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator are accepted. Those interested in leading a clinical trial or ancillary clinical trial should apply to the companion FOA as this particular grant does not permit it.
