Overview

The Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01), initiated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is designed to provide funding and dedicated time ranging from three to five years to individuals in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical science fields. The intention of this grant is to foster a rigorously supervised career progression leading to research independence.

Different NIH Institutes and Centers utilize this funding system to support various career development experiences, all aimed at empowering research independence. However, the K01 award is especially geared towards individuals targeting training in a new field, or those who have had a break in their research career due to illness or critical family issues.

In addition to this, some NIH Institutes and Centers administer separate K01 Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) exclusively intended to enhance the diversity of the research workforce.
