Overview

The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point has released a call for research proposals under their Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). West Point is a highly prestigious military institution dedicated to cultivating leaders of character who are ready for careers of excellence in the U.S. Army.

Notably, the USMA frequently undertakes research aimed at enriching the education of its cadets, advancing faculty expertise, and addressing significant issues faced by the Army and nation. Furthermore, exploration in emerging fields may give rise to innovative or improved Army capabilities. Most of the research endeavors are carried out through centers and institutes residing within academic departments.

These bodies are interconnected through the Academy Research Council (ARC) and are supported by the Academic Research Division (ARD), effectively providing the infrastructure for tackling major global challenges. They also offer a platform for faculty and students to excel in their respective disciplines and integrate the academy with both the Army and the nation.

Centers and institutes at West Point extend their focus beyond applied research to other aspects of the USMA mission. These entities not only implement in-house research programs but also carry out collaborative research with other organizations, and fund external research in select areas.

The BAA invites proposals from various institutions, including higher education organizations, nonprofits, state and local governments, foreign organizations, as well as for-profit organizations, large and small. The campaigns for which proposals are requested include Socio-Cultural, Information Technology, Ballistics, Weapons and Protections, Energy and Sustainability, Materials, Measurements and Facilities, Unmanned Systems and Space, Human Support Systems, and Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Quantum Technologies.

The USMA BAA is particularly interested in groundbreaking research that could lead to significant discoveries, enabling the development of new and improved Army technologies, operational capabilities, and related technologies. The specific areas and topics mentioned should be considered as illustrative rather than restrictive.
