Overview

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a grant called ClinGen Genomic Curation Expert Panels (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). This grant aims at creating a publicly available database that stores and shares data about the clinical importance of different genetic variants.

This project involves two main initiatives: The Clinical Genomics Resource (ClinGen) and the Clinical Variant Database (ClinVar). These platforms will offer standardized infrastructure and tools to decipher and identify the clinical implication of genetic variants.

ClinGen's role is to clarify the significance of genes and variants so they can be used in precision medicine and research. They do this by setting standard procedures for the clinical interpretation of genetic changes and making assertions based on expert agreement.

The aim of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to form Expert Panels. These panels will focus on identifying genes and genetic variations related to diseases or conditions that are deemed critical by the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs). Their role is to systematically determine how these genes and genetic variants affect the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases or conditions.

For this grant, the funded Genomic Curation Expert Panels are expected to use the databases and tools provided by ClinGen and ClinVar. These platforms offer the necessary procedures, interfaces, tools, and informatics infrastructure needed for this research work.
