Overview

The Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS) is a grant program that sets up academic institutions for advanced genomic research. The grant is designed to support multidisciplinary teams of investigators in their quest to develop groundbreaking genomic approaches in addressing biomedical issues. Each project funded by the grant aims to address a pressing problem in genomic science, genomic medicine, or computational genomics, with the goal of achieving a significant advancement in the field.

The nature of these projects is intended to be highly innovative, involving substantial risk. However, this risk is offset by meticulous scientific and management plans, as well as the potential for remarkable returns. The centers will primarily aim at creating pioneering technological or computational methods for data processing and analysis. These methods will be applied on a genome-scale biomedical problem or in other ways that will enhance our understanding of biological systems or the application of genomic knowledge towards clinical applications.

In addition to research, the CEGS also takes an active role in fostering the community of genomic scientists and engineers. These centers serve as melting pots of investigators from various disciplines, allowing for vibrant exchanges of ideas. The CEGS also commits to education and outreach, with the goal of expanding the pool of scientists and engineers who can utilize and apply the novel methods, concepts, and knowledge generated by the CEGS research. These educational opportunities target scientists at all levels of their career, promoting a culture of continuous learning and development.
