Overview

The High-Risk Rural Road (HRRR) Program is delivered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) through the Special Funding Program Unit's Local Safety Program. The primary goal of the program is to improve safety for all roadway users—including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users—and to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on public roadways under local agency jurisdiction. Projects are eligible if they implement proven safety improvements on roadways open to the public, regardless of whether the roads are included on the federal-aid eligible network. Applications are accepted annually through MDOT's Local Safety Call for Projects. Local agencies must submit proposals using the required Local Safety Application Submittal Sheet and Safety Project Submittal Form 1627 or the HSIP Streamlined Systemic Application in accordance with the annual Call Letter and CFP exhibit eligibility criteria.
