Overview

The Local Safety Program is delivered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Local Agency Program Special Funding Program Unit. The primary goal of the program is to improve safety for all roadway users, including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users, on public roadways under local agency jurisdiction.

Eligible applicants are local municipalities and local agencies in Michigan that have road jurisdiction. Proposed projects must be located on roads open to the public, and projects remain eligible even if the road is not part of the federal-aid eligible network. Eligible project types include Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) projects, High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) initiatives, and Streamlined Systemic safety installations.

Applications are accepted annually through a formal Call for Projects. Local agencies must submit required application materials, which include the Local Safety Application Submittal Sheet, the Safety Project Submittal (Form 1627), or the HSIP Streamlined Systemic Application, following the guidelines provided in the annual Call Letter and eligibility exhibits.
