Overview

The purpose of this grant program is to achieve the USDA Forest Service's program priorities and support the goals and objectives of the Michigan Forest Action Plan. The program supports initiatives that increase, enhance, and improve access to tree canopy and its benefits; improve the resilience and sustainability of the urban and community forest; and support the active participation of the community in urban forestry planning, planting and care.

Eligible projects must occur in communities identified in the Michigan UCF Assistance Grant Screening Tool. Partnerships with other eligible applicants and non-eligible entities are encouraged.

Eligible activities include public tree inventory, urban forest planning (management, strategic, wood utilization, climate adaptation), tree planting and establishment, tree pruning, community engagement and outreach, communication and education, capacity building, tree and stump removals (must be paired with tree planting at a ratio of 2 trees planted for every 1 tree/stump removed), nursery planning and establishment, and food forest planning and establishment. Ineligible activities include equipment purchases over $5,000, pass-through grants, construction and capital investments, land purchase/acquisition, and basic research.

Applications must be submitted through the DNR's MiGrants system by May 18, 2026, at 5pm ET. Applicants must register in MiGrants and are strongly recommended to obtain a SIGMA Vendor Number and a Federal Unique Entity ID (SAM.gov) during the application process.
