Overview

The Future Proud Michigan Educator: Military Veterans Grant provides a method for districts to implement a paid mentorship and salary program for military veterans seeking educator certification. Local education agencies (LEAs) and public school academies (PSAs) must apply on behalf of eligible veterans; veterans cannot apply directly. Participating veterans must possess a bachelor's degree, be enrolled in student teaching at a Michigan approved educator preparation provider, and meet the definition of a veteran under MCL 35.61. The student teaching must last one semester (12-15 weeks for traditional routes, 16-18 weeks for alternative routes) during which the veteran shadows a mentor teacher. To apply, districts must log into GEMS/MARS via MiLogin for Third Party Users, collaborate with their business office to establish a budget, and complete the 'Future Proud Michigan Educator Veterans Grant Application' questionnaire.
