Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants in Michigan

The Mutual Self-Help Housing Technical Assistance Grants program provides grants to qualified organizations to help them carry out local self-help housing construction projects. Grant recipients supervise groups of very-low- and low-income individuals and families as they construct their own homes in rural areas, with group members providing most of the construction labor on each other's homes under technical supervision.

Eligible applicants include government non-profit organizations, federally-recognized Tribes, and private non-profit organizations. Very-low-income families living in substandard housing are given first priority for loan assistance.

Eligible projects must be located in rural areas, as determined by the USDA Eligibility Site. Grant funds must be used to provide technical and supervisory assistance to participating families, assist other organizations in providing self-help assistance, and recruit families to help them complete loan applications. Funds may not be used to hire individuals to perform construction work for participants, purchase real estate or building materials, pay debts or expenses for participants, or cover indirect costs.

Applications are accepted through local USDA Rural Development offices year-round on an ongoing basis from October 1 through September 30.
