Overview

The Michigan Aquatic Invasive Plant Control Grant Program provides grants to eligible applicants for the control or eradication of aquatic invasive plant species in inland lakes. The program was created through the addition of Part 414 to the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.

To be eligible, applicants must be a legally constituted lake association or nonprofit, property owners association, homeowners association, lake board, or special assessment district. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate that a permit from the department is in effect to conduct the control or eradication activities included in the project.

Eligible projects must meet several requirements: there must be public access to the inland lake for all project activities; the water body must have vegetation management goals created by a licensed commercial applicator or lake manager; and all survey, control, eradication, and documentation activities must be completed by a qualified scientist, technician, licensed commercial aquatic applicator, or university representative. Furthermore, projects must utilize best management practices and products approved or authorized by the EPA, EGLE, or MDARD. Control and eradication efforts must target only aquatic invasive plants.
