Community Forestry Grants

The Community Forestry Grant (CFG) program provides financial and technical assistance to build local community capacity to grow, manage, and care for community trees and forests. The program aims to assist communities in developing sustainable management programs, address environmental justice issues, improve public awareness, and facilitate partnerships. Projects should align with the Michigan Forest Action Plan goals and strategies.

Eligible applicants include local units of government (city, village, township, county, public libraries), federally recognized tribal governments, state agencies, educational institutions, and 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Partnerships with other eligible applicants or non-eligible entities such as businesses and local groups are encouraged. Applicants that have not received a grant through the DNR's or USDA Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Programs in the last 3 years will be prioritized.

Eligible projects fall into categories including Assessment and Data (e.g., tree inventories, canopy assessments), Planning and Management (e.g., management plans, climate resilience plans), Tree Planting and Establishment, Tree Maintenance and Care (e.g., pruning, young tree care), and Engagement, Education and Training. Tree planting projects must occur on public land or land open to the public, or on private property with a specific agreement providing public benefit. Ineligible activities include equipment purchases over $5,000, construction, land acquisition, and research.

To apply, applicants must submit an application questionnaire, budget, and applicable attachments via email to the Urban and Community Forestry Program Manager. Applications are reviewed and scored based on technical merit, capability, measurable results, community engagement, and project sustainability. Grant funds are provided on a reimbursement basis.
