Nutrition & Healthy Lifestyles Program

The Nutrition & Healthy Lifestyles program supported innovative, evidence-based projects aimed at improving nutrition, healthy eating, food access, and physical activity for Michigan residents. As of 2026, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund no longer awards grants through a standalone Nutrition & Healthy Lifestyles initiative; instead, commitments to food access, food systems, and physical activity are integrated as cross-cutting focus areas within the Healthy Kids and Healthy Aging initiatives.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, federally recognized Tribes, local units of government, and the State of Michigan. Organizations must be tax-exempt under IRS regulations, maintain at least one paid full-time equivalent (FTE) staff member, and have a current audit, independently reviewed financial statements, or Form 990. While organizations outside Michigan are eligible to apply, all funded project activities must take place within the state of Michigan.

Funded projects historically included local food hub creation, food pharmacies, non-motorized trail development, adaptive sports initiatives, and nutrition education for vulnerable populations. Applications and concept submissions were handled online through the Health Fund's Fluxx grant portal.
