Overview
Goal/purpose: The Michigan Health Endowment Fund's Maternal & Infant Health Initiative seeks to reduce disparities, increase access to care, and improve birth and health outcomes for pregnant individuals and infants in Michigan. Priority areas include: addressing barriers in the service delivery environment through better integration of medical, behavioral, public health, and social services; increasing access to protective and clinical interventions by improving screening before, during, and after pregnancy and ensuring referral and connection to services; and implementing local policies, practices, and procedures that remove barriers and improve outcomes. Additional applicant eligibility: Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public entities such as local units of government and the State of Michigan, federally recognized Tribes, and public or private institutions of higher education. Applicants must have audited or independently reviewed financial statements and at least one paid FTE; all activities must occur in Michigan. Project eligibility: Community-driven, locally focused projects that improve care integration, expand access to evidence-based screening and follow-up, and make structural changes in policies or procedures are encouraged. Examples of funded projects include doula support and training, integrated care for perinatal substance use disorders, culturally and linguistically appropriate services, and initiatives addressing social determinants of health. Application process: For the 2025 cycle, a two-page concept paper was accepted through December 9, 2024, followed by full applications due January 21, 2025 via the Health Fund's online grant portal; awards were announced in May 2025. As of 2026, maternal and infant health grantmaking is being incorporated within the Health Fund's Healthy Kids program, with future RFPs expected in spring cycles; applicants should check the program page for updates.
