Overview

Purpose: Provide emergency aid and other direct support to college students to remove life barriers such as childcare, transportation, housing, food, textbooks, internet, and other program supplies, with the goal of increasing persistence and completion as part of Michigan’s Sixty by 30 initiative. Additional eligibility: In 2025, institutions that previously received a Barrier Removal Direct to Students award in 2024 were not eligible; independent nonprofit applicants must show they can reach target students and complement, not duplicate, college efforts. Project eligibility: Funding may pay for direct financial assistance to students with greatest need (with or without documented emergencies), as well as limited program costs such as printing/materials, equipment and supplies, IT supports to reach students, and staff time to administer the program; at least 75 percent of funds must go directly to students. Application process: Applicants were required to submit through the State of Michigan EGrAMS grants portal by 04/11/2025 (paper forms were for planning only). Applications included organizational information, requested amount, a project description and budget, and responses addressing targeting of students with highest need, cross-silo collaboration, and impact tracking; awards were expected in May 2025 and funds must be spent within two years.
