Overview

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) provides matching grants to states and local governments for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. Eligible projects include trails, picnic areas, beaches, campgrounds, boating access, and fishing areas.

Applicants must be a unit of government, including Native American tribes, school districts, or any combination of units with legal authority to provide recreation. A DNR-approved community five-year recreation plan is required to be eligible for funding.

Applications must be submitted through the MiGrants system. Proposals are evaluated by DNR staff using established criteria and alignment with Michigan's Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP). The DNR makes recommendations to the National Park Service (NPS), which gives final approval.
