Overview

The Source Water Protection Grants program helps Michigan public water supply systems develop, initiate, and maintain local source water protection plans that reduce the risk of contamination to drinking water sources. Funding supports eligible activities such as wellhead or intake delineation studies, contaminant source inventories, abandoned well search and management programs, development of ordinances and other management strategies, emergency response planning and training, public education and outreach, and intergovernmental partnership agreements in source water protection areas. Eligible applicants are Type 1 public water supply systems that use groundwater or surface water and meet program conditions, including being a community system or a not-for-profit nontransient, noncommunity system, not being federally owned, having no outstanding fees, providing a 50% local cash match, forming a local protection team of at least three members, submitting a compliant narrative workplan, and completing work within one year. Applications are submitted electronically through MiEHDWIS (via MILogin), are typically available annually on May 1, and are due by June 15. Proposals are scored using a statutory points system to establish funding priority; awards are announced in the fall for a grant cycle running October 1 through September 30.
