Overview

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Major Grant program aims to make it safe, convenient and fun for children to bicycle and walk to school. When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from school is an easy way to get the regular physical activity children need for good health. Safe Routes to School initiatives also help ease traffic jams, unite neighborhoods and contribute to students' readiness to learn in school.

Applying for a Major Grant requires an in-depth planning process before submitting an application. This process can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. Before submitting an application, applicants must complete the following for all schools included in the project: gather an SRTS team, distribute and collect parent and student survey data, conduct walking and biking audits, and schedule and hold action planning meetings.

Eligible projects include infrastructure treatments and non-infrastructure programming projects. Applications are submitted using the Michigan Department of Transportation MDOT Grant System (MGS).
