Safe Routes to Schools Major Grant

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Major Grant program offers funding to improve safety and convenience for children walking and biking to school. The program supports both infrastructure projects (such as sidewalk improvements and street crossings) and non-infrastructure activities (such as education, encouragement, and enforcement programs).

Applying for a Major Grant requires an in-depth planning process that typically takes 6 months to a year. Before submitting an application via the Michigan Department of Transportation MDOT Grant System (MGS), schools must register, form a team, collect student and parent survey data, conduct walking and biking audits, and hold action planning meetings. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with specific deadlines for review cycles.
