Overview
Purpose: Michigan Safe Routes to School Major Grants fund planning-linked infrastructure that makes it safer and more convenient for K-12 students to walk, bike, and roll to school, with optional program funds to support education, encouragement, and evaluation. Additional eligibility: Applications must be submitted by a local Act 51 road agency on behalf of participating schools, which must include at least one K-12 grade; the school/community team must complete the required planning steps and coordinate with an SRTS grant coordinator. Project eligibility: Typical infrastructure includes sidewalk gap closures and repairs, curb ramps, crossings and signals, traffic calming, lighting along student routes, bike parking, and remote drop-off sites; ineligible items include design and construction engineering, project administration, property acquisition, landscaping, bus stop improvements, and other listed items. Non-infrastructure programs may include pedestrian/bicycle safety education, walking school buses, bike trains, portable bike racks, route maps, part-time coordinators, incentives, and enforcement/education activities. Application process: After planning, obtain a MILogin and MDOT Grant System (MGS) access, complete the TAP-SRTS application’s required sections, and upload supporting documents (Action Plan, survey results, maps/photos, non-infrastructure requests and budget). Applications are reviewed on a rolling cycle by an Application Review Committee; the next complete-application due date is 02/18/2026.
