Overview

Purpose: MI Healthy Schools (Section 12a) funds competitive projects that lower energy costs and improve student and staff health outcomes by repairing or replacing critical building systems in K-12 facilities. Eligible projects include indoor air quality improvements (HVAC and air conditioning), energy enhancements (efficiency retrofits, on-site renewables, and electrification), toxin remediation (lead and, per statute, asbestos), and drinking water system upgrades such as hydration stations. Eligibility and priorities: Districts and intermediate school districts may apply; competitive scoring gives priority to schools in Justice40 and environmental justice communities, air-quality nonattainment zones, high-asthma-burden areas, high-poverty/rural areas, and schools with high free/reduced-price meal rates, with preference for union labor and Michigan companies. Application process: Applicants applied through the State of Michigan NexSys grants portal; the application period is closed. The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Education in collaboration with EGLE and MDHHS. Awards (including amended allocations) were posted June 12, 2025, and funds operate as a multi-year work project through September 30, 2027.
