Overview

The Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant Program offers funding to participating communities to support a wide range of local historic preservation activities. Administered by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in partnership with the National Park Service, these grants are exclusively available to communities designated as CLGs.

Only active CLGs in good standing may apply. While the CLG must be the applicant, they may partner with non-profit organizations or other public entities within their jurisdiction. Projects are funded in two primary categories: (1) Pre-Development and Development projects, which include physical 'bricks and mortar' work, structural repairs, and planning documents like Historic Structure Reports for properties listed in the National Register; and (2) Planning, Documentation, and Education projects, which include surveys, National Register nominations, design guidelines, and educational workshops.

Applications for the FY 2026 cycle were accepted starting October 13, 2025, with a deadline of February 6, 2026. Grant agreements are typically executed in the summer following the application period.
