Animal Welfare Fund Grants (Animal Shelter Grants)

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's (MDARD) Animal Industry Division (AID) is offering grants pursuant to Public Act 132 of 2007, the Animal Welfare Fund Act. The purpose is to provide funds to promote sterilization and adoption of dogs and cats, to improve knowledge of the proper care of animals pursuant to state animal anticruelty laws by educating the public and training personnel authorized by law to enforce state animal anticruelty laws, to support and enhance programs that provide for the care and protection of animals, and to allow the purchase of equipment and supplies for programs that receive grants under this act.

Eligible applicants are government/municipality or nonprofit organizations that operate animal shelters currently registered with MDARD pursuant to Public Act 287 of 1969, as amended. Applicants must have submitted their Annual Shelter Activity Report (AI-034) for the previous year's statistics.

Eligible projects include Spay/Neuter Surgical Programs, Public Education Programs, Training for Authorized Personnel Programs, and Care and Protection Programs. Funded programs and purchases must occur during the funding window from February 1 through September 1 to qualify for reimbursement.

Applications must be received by October 15 of the year prior to the grant cycle.
