Overview

The Marine Safety Grants program provides funding to county sheriff departments in Michigan to promote recreational watercraft safety through law enforcement and education. Eligible expenses include patrol time, law enforcement work, instruction of boating safety classes, administration of proctored boating safety exams, inspection of boat liveries, operating costs, and the purchase of equipment necessary for patrol and law enforcement work. Applications are made available in January each year and must be submitted electronically in the MiGrants system by March 1. Funding allocations are determined based on factors such as the area of public waters patrolled, available law enforcement personnel, and the extent of the county's boating safety education program.
