Overview
City, village, and township law enforcement agencies are eligible for grant funding if locally designated ingress/egress routes are provided for snowmobile access to local businesses or amenities from the state designated trail system. The number of state designated snowmobile trail miles within a county will be considered as part of the grant allocation process for county grants.
Grant funding is made available for patrol of the state designated snowmobile trail system and routes connecting with the state designated trails. Expenses applied to patrol time, operating costs, and purchase of equipment necessary for enforcement work are eligible for reimbursement, dependent on availability of state funding and as specified in the grant agreement for each agency.
Grant applications are made available in June each year. Law enforcement agencies' grant proposals are due by August 1 to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Department reviews, evaluates and approves funding to law enforcement agencies based on the criteria listed above. The Department prepares grant agreements and notifies each law enforcement agency of their approved snowmobile law enforcement grant.
