Overview

Purpose: Fund Special Maintenance projects that keep Michigan's designated snowmobile trails open, safe and accessible by addressing infrastructure needs such as bridges, culverts, erosion control and trail relocations. Eligibility: Local units of government and nonprofit, incorporated snowmobile clubs and organizations may apply; individuals are not eligible. Only current trail sponsors may request Special Maintenance funding and must have or secure trail right-of-way access, maintain required insurance, and have suitable equipment to maintain assigned segments. Project eligibility: Examples include bridge construction or repair, culvert replacement, erosion control, relocating trails off plowed roads, and other work required to open or keep a trail open; projects may require professional design, permits and compliance with prevailing wage where applicable. Application process: Applications are released in late spring, and complete Snowmobile Trail grant applications with all required documentation are due by July 1. Sponsors coordinate proposed Special Maintenance projects with their DNR contact prior to applying, submit the Special Maintenance application (PR1852) and supporting materials, and projects are reviewed by DNR. Agreements are issued in October for the upcoming season; sponsors return signed agreements by the end of October. Special Maintenance projects are one-year grants and must be completed by Sept 30, with any extension requested before Sept 1.
