Overview

The purpose of the Snowmobile Trail Improvement Fund Grant program is to provide financial assistance to local units of government and incorporated nonprofit groups for the development and maintenance of snowmobile trails and facilities as a part of a designated statewide Snowmobile Trail system. Funds are available for seasonal grooming and general maintenance, special maintenance projects that improve the condition and/or access to trails, and replacement of equipment used for maintaining trails. Eligible applicants include local units of government (counties, townships, cities, or villages) and nonprofit, incorporated snowmobile clubs and organizations. Individuals are not eligible. Trail sponsors must have their own equipment for maintaining trails and must be able to obtain a trail right-of-way if the trail is not on public property. Grant applications and information are made available in late spring, with complete application packages due to the Department by July 1. Grant agreements are issued to sponsors in October for the upcoming snowmobile season.
