Overview

The Rural Electronics Recycling Grant Program, administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), aims to support community collection events to provide ongoing access to electronics recycling in underserved areas of the state. The program prioritizes encouraging collection and proper recycling from locations in underserved areas and Communities with Environmental Justice (EJ) Concerns.

Eligible applicants include cities, villages, townships, charter townships, conservation districts, counties, tribal governments, municipal solid waste authorities, resource recovery authorities, non-profit organizations, public school districts, local health departments, regional planning agencies, and privately owned recycling businesses physically located in Michigan. Grants are not available to communities or organizations that choose to use EGLE grant funds when previous funding sources are still available.

Projects under the 'Grants to Hold Collection Events' category are limited to a maximum of $15,000 per grant request and require a minimum commitment of two events per grant. Funds can only be used to offset the cost of recycling televisions, monitors, and printers (up to 30 cents/lb for TVs/monitors and 20 cents/lb for printers) and cover up to 50% of transportation charges. A Michigan Registered Electronics Recycler must be used for these events. Staffing costs are not eligible for reimbursement. Grantees are encouraged to establish a co-pay system to offset expenses not covered by the grant.

To apply, applicants must submit a complete response addressing the Program Objectives, Priorities, and Applicant Tasks using the provided format, including a Grant Application Cover Sheet, Completed Budget Form, Detailed Timeline, and Organizational Charts. Proposals must be submitted by email to the Recycling Unit by the deadline. This is a reimbursement-based opportunity; costs must be incurred and paid for prior to reimbursement.
