Overview

The Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant program, administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), aims to clean up abandoned scrap tires and provide convenient disposal options for residents. The program prioritizes the cleanup of tires accumulated before 1991, tire piles on public and private land, and residential drop-off programs. The program seeks to reduce public health and environmental risks associated with scrap tires, such as mosquito breeding and tire fires.

Eligible applicants include owners of private property in Michigan with 500 or more scrap tires, as well as Michigan public and non-profit entities such as cities, villages, townships, counties, tribal governments, watershed organizations, and recycling authorities. Projects must involve the cleanup of abandoned tires on public property, cleanup of 500 or more tires on private property, or scrap tire collection events. Applicants must use a registered scrap tire processor to complete the cleanup project.

To apply, applicants must submit a complete online application by the deadline. The process involves selecting a registered processor and entering into a direct pay agreement. Applications are evaluated based on priorities such as the age of tire accumulation and threat to public health. Successful applicants will enter into a grant agreement with the State. Funds for cleanup on private property must be expended by December 31, 2026, while all other funds must be expended by December 31, 2025.
